Top 5 Healing Foods this Winter

Christmas is coming, there's a nip in the air and everybody seems to be dropping like flies. We spoke to our friends Peel and Coconut to find out more about the foods we should be eating this winter to keep our immune systems healthy and energy levels up! It is the season to be jolly after all ....

Turmeric

Turmeric is a very strong antioxidant which is perfect for combatting colds this winter. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory. Both these benefits are due to curcumin, the main active ingredient. However, the amount is very small and is poorly absorbed unless eaten with black pepper. You will find both turmeric and black pepper in our chicken and lentil curry on the menu this week!

Chia seeds

Don’t be fooled by their size, chia seeds pack a nutritional punch; most notably fibre. A 25g portion of chia seeds contains 9g fibre. Fibre is important for a healthy digestive system and most people don’t hit their recommended daily amount of 30g. You’ll find chia seeds in our blueberry and chia seed pancakes on the menu this week. Blueberries are also a powerful source of antioxidants.

Ginger

Ginger has been shown to be affective against exercise induced muscle pain and soreness. It is the perfect winter spice so grab a cup of hot chai tea (a great antioxidant) and put on your favourite Christmas film. We’ve also added this to our chicken and lentil curry.

Coconut

Coconuts are highly nutritious and rice in fibre. They are lactose free which makes coconut milk a great milk substitute and a popular choice for vegans. 50% of the fat in coconuts is lauric acid; this has been known to improve cholesterol levels and heart health.

Lentils

Part of the legume family, lentils are mighty and full of cholesterol-lowering fibre. They can also increase your energy by replenishing iron levels. This is great for women during menstruation or during pregnancy as they are more at risk of iron deficiency. A hearty lentil soup is perfect during the winter months. And of course, our chicken and lentil curry is chock full of these little guys!
